ESR9. Channel models and network planning for 5G private industrial networks infrastructure

Main supervisor profile and contact: Yoan Corre <ycorre@siradel.com> and Sylvain Aubin <saubin@siradel.com>

Institution: Siradel

Description of the job: SIRADEL (French high-tech company located in Greater Rennes area) is looking for a highly-motivated research associate having a Master degree or equivalent in Electrical or Telecommunications engineering, to join the new 5GSmartFact project (Future Wireless Connected and Automated Industry enabled by 5G). 5GSmartFact is a four-year Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Union. As an Early Stage Researcher (ESR), you will be hosted by an experienced research team in Siradel and be involved in 5G network simulation for industry 4.0 applications.

Mission: You will contribute to an in-depth characterization of the industrial radio channel properties at 5G frequencies (mid-band and high-band frequencies), based on on-site measurements and ray-tracing simulations, including time-variant channel in complex environments, e.g. warehouse, factory, possibly composed of several buildings. You will also go beyond the conventional radio-planning techniques for simulation of the 5G smart factory networks (access and backhaul layers) by supporting advanced radio techniques such as distributed MIMO and Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS). Simulation studies will be realized to assess the radio channel properties and the network performance for realistic industrial IoT use cases implemented in the 3D digital twin of a factory: coverage, throughput, availability, reliability, capacity; and latency (possibly completed with indicators related to positioning and energy consumption). You will investigate and demonstrate the benefits of the new channel models and radio-planning functions for the design and optimization of 5G industry communication networks.

Main functions: Your main foreseen activities as a researcher may be summarized as: radio modelling; measurements, simulations, and evaluation studies. Those activities will be conducted within a research group dealing with wireless network simulation and optimization, and under the supervision of senior research fellows having strong experience in scientific collaboration. You are expected to pursue a PhD. Therefore, this job offer includes a PhD opportunity with joint supervision by SIRADEL and University Paris-Saclay. Moreover, within the framework of the 5GSmartFact project, you will benefit from regular multi-competence training sessions (courses and workshops) fostering your personal and scientific/academic and business-oriented development. You will also participate to the project’s scientific dissemination (generation and presentation of scientific publications) and broader public communication (newsletter, posts; videos, public talks). You will actively contribute to the technical collaboration towards the achievement of the 5GSmartFact goals, and to the technical deliverables.

Secondments: You will spend a 2 months secondment at the University of Aalborg (Aalborg, Denmark) (supervised by Dr. Preben Mogensen) and a 6 months at ABB premises (Västeras, Sweden) (supervised by Dr. Krister Landernas).

Doctoral programme: The ESR will be enrolled in the University of Paris-Saclay doctoral programme under the joint supervision of Yoann Corre (Siradel) and Marco Di Renzo (University of Paris-Saclay).

Requirements of the candidate

  • Education level: Engineering or Master degree.

  • Degree/speciality: Electrical or Telecommunications.

  • Language skills: Very good English standards (oral, reading, writing) are required. Some knowledge of French is not required but may be an asset.

  • Research experience: No research experience is required, however any such valuable experience (innovation, publication, deposit of a patent) during your academic training and professional career will be considered.

  • Other skills: Deep knowledge on mobile communication networks (focus on the 4G/5G physical layer and radio resource allocations). Knowledge on electromagnetic-wave propagation. Motivated by modelling and simulation. Programming skills (C++, Matlab, Python) e.g. for production of prototypes. Very good relational and communication abilities. International experience during your academic training is not required but would be an asset.
